Some SMB clients cannot access cluster file shares but they can access non-cluster file shares that are located on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

A SMB client that uses the ASCII format cannot access cluster file shares that are located on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2. However, they can access non-cluster file shares that are located on the same computer.

For example, an Advanced Interactive Executive (AIX) server cannot connect to a cluster file server that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2. However, the AIX server can successfully connect to a non-cluster file share.

Note AIX is a UNIX operating system developed by IBM.

Cause

This problem occurs because the cluster file shares expect the Unicode format. Therefore, the SMB clients that use the ASCII format cannot access the cluster file shares.
