Stop error message when you connect and then disconnect a USB camera from a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008: "Fatal System Error: 0x000000C4 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VI...

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You connect a universal serial bus (USB) camera to a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • The camera starts streaming content.
  • You disconnect the camera from the computer.
  • You repeat the previous steps to connect and disconnect the camera several times.
In this scenario, system performance is slow.

If you use the Driver Verifier (Verifier.exe) tool to verify the USB camera driver (Usbcamd2.sys), the computer crashes when you disconnect the camera from the computer. Additionally, you receive the following Stop error message:
*** Fatal System Error: 0x000000C4 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION
Notes
  • The four parameters in the Stop error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • Not all "Stop 0x000000C4" error messages are caused by this problem.

If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.

  • The files that apply to a specific product or milestone (RTM, SPn) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:
    VersionProductMilestoneService branch
    6.0.6000.20xxxWindows VistaRTMLDR
    6.0.6001.22xxxWindows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 SP1SP1LDR

  • Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately . MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files (attributes not listed) are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
