When you use a VPN connection that uses Smart Card authentication on a client computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, the computer stops responding

Consider the following scenario:

• You install a Third-party legacy Transport Driver Interface (TDI) filter driver on a client computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  
  
  Note TDI filter drivers are used by some antivirus or firewall applications to monitor network traffics, such as User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packets.
• You create a virtual private network (VPN) connection that uses Smart Card authentication to connect to a server that is running Routing and Remote Access service.
• Large UDP packets, which are more than 1460 bytes, are sent over the VPN connection.

In this scenario, when you use the VPN connection to connect to the server, the client computer stops responding. Additionally, the VPN connection is lost.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
