The CD drive or the DVD drive is missing from the "Send To" shortcut menu and from the Recording tab of the drive properties after you erase a disc on a computer that is running Windows Vista SP2 or Windows Server 2008 SP2

Symptoms

Assume that you have a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2. After you erase a rewritable disc in a CD drive or in a DVD drive, the CD drive or the DVD drive is missing from the Send To shortcut menu and from the Recording tab of the drive properties.

Resolution

Hotfix information

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the �Hotfix Request� page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Workaround

  • Restart the computer, and then erase the CD or DVD disc.
  • Right-click the CD or DVD drive and then click Format to format the disc.
  • Insert a formatted CD or DVD into the drive, and then insert the erased disc.
