A memory leak occurs when you use a DirectShow-based application to play Motion JPEG-encoded media files on a computer that is running Windows Vista SP2 or Windows Server 2008 SP2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You have a Microsoft DirectShow-based application on a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2). You use the DirectShow-based application to play a media file that is encoded by using the motion JPEG codec. Then, a memory leak occurs.

If you use the Performance Monitor (Perfmon.exe) to monitor the DirectShow-based application, you notice that the Private Bytes counter continually increases. Additionally, the DirectShow-based application may occasionally restart.

Note This problem also occurs when you use a DirectShow-based application to play streaming motion JPEG images from a video camera.

Cause

This problem occurs because of an error in the DirectShow Core DLL (Quarzt.dll). This error causes a memory leak in Quarzt.dll, when you use a DirectShow-based application to play media files that are encoded by using the motion JPEG codec.
