You cannot install a 64-bit version of SQL Server 2005 on a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You try to install a 64-bit version of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. However, the installation fails, and then you receive the following error message:
SQL Server Setup failed to execute a command for server configuration. The error was [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Windows NT user or group 'COMPUTERNAME\SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$COMPUTERNAME $ INSTANCENAME' not found. Check the name again. Refer to the server error logs and Setup logs for detailed error information.
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The name of the computer contains some lowercase characters. For example, the name of the computer is "Workstation1."
  • You specify a case-sensitive collation for the instance of SQL Server that you try to install.
Note
  • In some scenarios, this problem may also occur if the name of the computer contains some special characters such as Turkish characters.
  • This problem does not occur on a computer that is running a 32-bit version of Windows Vista or of Windows Server 2008.

Cause

The 64-bit version of the Microsoft Installer (MSI) process loads an incorrect version of the Acspecfc.dll file. The MSI process loads the Acspecfc.dll file from the SYSTEM32\AppPatch folder instead of from the SYSTEM32\AppPatch\AppPatch64 folder.
