You cannot deploy a shared printer in Windows Server 2008 if the owner is not the SYSTEM account or a member of the Administrators group

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install a shared printer on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008. The owner of this shared printer is not the SYSTEM account or a member of the Administrators group.
  • You create and apply a Group Policy preferences (GPP) setting that deploys the shared printer as a local printer on clients that are running Windows Server 2008.
In this scenario, the shared printer is not deployed.

Cause

This issue occurs because the security descriptor of the shared printer is used incorrectly when a GPP deploys a shared printer as a local printer on clients.
