Error message when you log on to an iSCSI target by using the Iscsicpl.exe tool on a computer that is running an Itanium-based version of Windows Server 2008 if CHAP authentication is enabled: "Invalid access to memory location"

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Microsoft Internet SCSI (iSCSI) Initiator on a computer that is running an Itanium (IA-64) version of Windows Server 2008.
  • You register two iSCSI targets in the iSCSI Initiator.
  • You try to log on to the iSCSI targets by using the following settings for the Iscsicpl.exe tool:
    • On the Log on to Target dialog box, you select the Automatically restore the connection when the computer starts option and the Enable multi-Path option.
    • You enable the Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) authentication.
In this scenario, you can log on to the first iSCSI target successfully. However, when you try to log on to the second iSCSI target, you receive the following error message:
Invalid access to memory location.

Cause

The Iscsicpl.exe tool forwards the logon request to the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator service as a remote procedure call (RPC). However, the iSCSI Initiator service tries to access an unaligned address. Therefore, the iSCSI Initiator service returns an ERROR_NOACCESS error to the Iscsicpl.exe tool.
