The Chkdsk.exe utility does not detect and fix a corrupted file that contains a non-resident TXF_DATA attribute in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008

On a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, you try to access a file on an NTFS volume that contains a non-resident TXF_DATA attribute. However, the NTFS file system reports a file corruption error. Additionally, when you run the Chkdsk.exe utility to check the affected volume for problems, Chkdsk.exe does not detect and fix the corruption. Therefore, the application that uses the file does not run correctly.

This problem may occur in either of the following situations:

• You create and manipulate an NTFS volume on a non-Windows-based operating system, such as Linux.
• You use imaging tools to re-image a Windows-based operating system on a non-Windows-based operating system, such as Linux.

This problem occurs because the NTFS file system does not recognize the non-resident TXF_DATA attribute. When you operate NTFS volume by using a non-Windows-based operating system, the resident TXF_DATA attribute may unexpectedly change to non-resident attribute.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

To use one of the hotfixes in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately . MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component.
