Hyper-V integration components may not be installed on a Windows Vista Service Pack 2 virtual machine

Symptoms

On a Windows Server 2008-based computer, you try to install the integration components in a Hyper-V virtual machine that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2). In this case, the installation may fail, and you may receive the following error message:
An error has occurred: One of the update processes returned error code 1.

Cause

This issue occurs if the management operating system that has the Hyper-V role installed does not have Windows Server 2008 SP2 installed. If you have a virtual machine that is running Windows Vista SP2, you have to use the Vmguest.iso from Windows Server 2008 SP2 to install the integration components.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Install Windows Server 2008 SP2 in the management operating system.

Method 2

Copy the Vmguest.iso file that is located in the C:\Windows\System32 directory from another Windows Server 2008 system that has SP2 installed. This file must be copied to the C:\Windows\System32 directory on the management operating system.

Note To replace the Vmguest.iso file in the management operating system, you have to take ownership of the file and then modify the NTFS permissions so that you have full control permission.
