INTRODUCTION

Microsoft Silverlight is a cross-browser, multi-environment plug-in that delivers the next generation of Microsoft .NET–based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web. This article describes the update for Silverlight that was released on August 27, 2009.

Summary

An update is available for Microsoft Silverlight. This update offers a new build that is an upgrade to earlier versions of Silverlight. This update is included in current Silverlight installers. If your computer does not have Silverlight installed, the installer will be offered to you by Microsoft Update or by Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

This update includes security and reliability improvements. This update broadens support for Unicode characters, especially for the GB18030 character set for China. This update is backward-compatible with applications that were created against earlier versions of Silverlight.

The Silverlight installer includes all previous updates in addition to this update. To install the latest version of Silverlight, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Microsoft Update


This update is also available to users of Microsoft Update. If you have an earlier version of Silverlight installed, this update will be offered as "Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB 974331)."

WSUS


This update is also available on Microsoft Update through Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).



If a computer has an earlier version of Microsoft Silverlight installed, this update will be offered as "Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB 974331)."



If a computer does not have Silverlight installed, this update will be offered by the latest Silverlight 3.0 installer as "Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB 974331)."



Silverlight 3.0 contains an auto-updating mechanism. By default, this mechanism is turned off in the WSUS package. Future updates will be provided through WSUS updates.
