Error code 1450 after you transfer data by using the named pipes protocol between a client computer and a server that are running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You have a client computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista. You also have a server that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista. You run an application that uses the named pipes protocol to transfer data between the client computer and the server. After interprocess communication (IPC) between the client computer and the server runs for some time, the application is aborted on the client computer. Additionally, you receive the following error code:
Error code 1450 (ERROR_NO_SYSTEM_RESOURCES)
When this problem occurs, the value of the Pool Nonpaged Bytes performance counter keeps increasing. If you use a memory monitoring tool to monitor the memory pool, you see that the memory leak occurs in the nonpaged pool and in the SmMs tag.

Additionally, if you look at network traces you may see an excessive number ofSTATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER responses to SMB2requests forQUERY INFORMATION (0x10), Class=FileNetworkOpenInformation'on named pipe communication (i.e. on samr or srvsvc pipes), example:

Client Request:
Vista-clientSMB2-serverSMB2SMB2:C QUERY INFORMATION (0x10), Class=FileNetworkOpenInformation (34), FID=0xFFFFFFFF003000D5(samr@#90546)

Server Response:
SMB2-serverVista-clientSMB2SMB2:R - NT Status: System - Error, Code = (13) STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER QUERY INFORMATION (0x10) , File=samr@#90546

Note This problem does not occur if the server runs Windows XP or Windows Server 2003.

Cause

This problem occurs because of a memory leak in the Mrxsmb20.sys file. The memory leak occurs when a query cannot access a named pipe.

Resolution

To resolve the problem, apply the hotfix on the client computer.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, your computer must be running one of the following Windows operating systems:
  • Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfix.
