An application may encounter an access violation exception when it uses the Hbaapi.dll module to query information from a DVD drive or a CD drive that is attached to an HBA adapter on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 SP2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You attach a DVD drive or a CD drive to an HBA adapter on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • You run an application that uses the Hbaapi.dll module to access the drive. For example, the application calls the GetFcpTargetMapping function in the module.

In this scenario, the application may crash because of an access violation error.

Cause

The Hbaapi.dll module assumes the devices that are connected to the host bus adapters (HBA) are compliant with SCSI specifications or with Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface (ATAPI) specifications. Based on this assumption, the Hbaapi.dll module then requests information from the device. If this assumption is not valid, an access violation error occurs and then the application crashes.
