Properties contain invalid characters when an application that uses the Cdosys.dll module sets these properties to DBCS characters on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have an application that uses the Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) for Windows (Cdosys.dll) to generate an e-mail message on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008.
  • The application sets one or more properties to double-byte character set (DBCS) characters. For example, you set the From property to Korean characters.
In this scenario, the values of these properties appear as question marks.

Cause

This problem occurs because the application uses the DetectInputCodepage function. The following table shows the return values together with the corresponding meaning for this function.
Return valuesDescription
S_OK Success.
S_FALSE The method cannot determine the code page of the input stream.
E_FAIL An error occurred.
When the S_FALSE value is returned, the function cannot detect the code page. In the scenario that is mentioned in the Symptoms section, the S_FALSE value is returned. However, the default code page (65001) is incorrectly used to process the DBCS characters, and they appear as question marks.
