The validation process may fail when you add a node to an existing Windows Server 2008 IA-64 failover cluster

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you add a node to an existing Windows Server 2008 IA-64 failover cluster, the validation process may fail with the following error:
"An error occurred while executing the test. There was an error validating the operating system QFEs. There was an error retrieving the QFE information from node "<FQDN>"."
This issue occurs mostly on failover cluster instances for Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

Events that resemble the following may be logged in the System log of the existing cluster node:

Faulting application wmiprvse.exe, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e023e5, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e03f2d, exception code 0xc0000374, fault offset <memory address>, process id <PID>, application start time <time>.

Cause

This problem occurs when either of these two components are installed on the existing cluster node:
  • Microsoft Silverlight
  • Microsoft Office 2003 Web Components Service Pack 1 (SP1) for the 2007 Office system.

Note Office 2003 Web Components SP1 for the 2007 Office system is automatically installed during the setup of SQL Server 2008.

This issue is known to affect only Windows Server 2008-based or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computers that have Itanium (IA-64) architectures.

More information

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Install a Windows Server 2008 SP2-based computer.
  2. Add the failover clustering feature.
  3. Create a failover cluster, and then select the existing server as the first node Install.
  4. Select SQL Server 2008 for failover clustering.
  5. Obtain a second Windows Server 2008 SP2-based computer.
  6. Use the "Add node" wizard to join the new node to the existing cluster.
Validation will fail when hotfixes of the joining node are enumerated.
