Printer Redirection from Client to Terminal Services Session Does not Preserve User Preferences

When you create a Terminal Services (TS) Session from a client to a Windows Server 2003 machine, the printers in the client machine gets redirected to the TS session. But the redirected printer does not preserve the user preferences set in the client machine for the printer. This could result in potential loss of capabilities or defaults. In addition bi-directional communication may not function properly.

The�user settings are not propagated to the redirected printer Object.

You can resolve the problem�by manually updating the redirected printer object to match the settings of�the printer in the client.

This is a limitation of how printer redirection is implemented in Windows Server 2003�which requires installation of the driver and print queue in both the client and server machine.

Windows Server 2008�implements "TS Easy Print " which avoids the need to install the driver and print queue�in the server. The TS session points back to the same printer Object�installed in the client�and hence the same user settings are used during printing.
