View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install security update MS09-012 (956572) on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003.
  • You have a service that runs under the Network Service account and that accesses the \?? namespace.
In this scenario, the service cannot access objects under the \?? namespace, and you receive an "Access denied" error message.

For example, you may encounter one of the following issues when you install security update MS09-012 on a computer that has the SQL server service installed.
  • Issue 1

You cannot create a database that has the FileStream feature enabled, and you receive an "Access denied" error.
  • Issue 2

You cannot open an existing database that has the FileStream feature enabled, and you receive the following error message:
Database <database_name> cannot be opened due to inaccessible files or insufficient memory or disk space
When Issue 1 or Issue 2 occurs, the SQL server error log contains information that resembles the following:
FCB::Startup () failed: Could not open file <file name> for file number 65537. OS error: 0x80070005(Access is denied.).
