An Automated System Recovery backup of the system state fails on a Windows Server 2008 failover cluster node if the database of an application is saved on a shared disk

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have the Failover Clustering feature installed on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • You install an application on this failover cluster node. The database of the application is saved on a shared disk.
  • You try to perform an Automated System Recovery backup of the system state by using the Wbadmin.exe command-line tool on the computer.

Note There is no option to retrieve only the system state backup from the Windows Server Backup management console on Windows Server 2008. Therefore, run the wbadmin command to back up only the system state. To do this, open a command prompt by using an administrator account, type the following command, and then press Enter:
    wbadmin.exe start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:letterdrive
In this scenario, the backup fails. Additionally, the following error message is logged in the Application log: For example, this problem occurs if you install one of the following services on a Windows Server 2008 failover cluster node and the databases for the service are saved on a shared disk:
  • Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)
  • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server service
  • Certification authority (CA) role service

Cause

This problem occurs because the Automated System Recovery writer in Windows Server 2008 disallows a backup on the shared disks when the shared disks are marked as critical.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must apply this hotfix and create a ClusteredCAEnabled registry key. For more information about how to create a ClusteredCAEnabled registry key, see the "Registry information" section.

Note Windows Server 2008 does not support Bare Metal Recovery backup for cluster shared disks that are marked as critical volumes, even after you install this hotfix. Bare Metal Recovery backup is supported by Windows Server 2008 R2.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the “Hotfix Request” page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, the computer must have Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed. Additionally, the computer must have the Failover Clustering feature installed.

Registry information

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
To use the hotfix, you must create a registry key. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to the computer as an administrator, and then start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate and then right-click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Settings
  3. Point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type ClusteredCAEnabled, and then press Enter.
  5. Double-click ClusteredCAEnabled, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  6. Exit Registry Editor.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
