The desktop is not refreshed when you rename and then immediately delete a file on the desktop of a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

On a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, you rename a file on the desktop. Then, you immediately delete the file by using a script or an application. The script or the application calls the MoveFile function and then calls the DeleteFile function. However, the icon for the original file still appears on the desktop.

Note This issue occurs only if the file is located on the desktop.

This issue occurs because of a race condition in the Windows shell.

Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

• The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately. MUM and MANIFEST files, together with the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files (attributes not listed) are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.

To work around this issue, press F5 to refresh the desktop.

Steps to reproduce the problem

1. Create a Test.txt file on the desktop.
2. Open a Command Prompt window. Type the following commands, and press ENTER after each command:
   • cd %userprofile%\desktop
   • ren Test.txt Newtest.txt & del Newtest.txt
   The Test.txt file still appears on the desktop.
3. Press F5.
   The Test.txt file disappears.
