Exceptions that are thrown from a 64-bit application that is running in the 64-bit editions of Windows Server 2003 or of Windows XP Professional are silently ignored

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You develop a 64-bit application to run on a 64-bit edition of Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 or on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Service Pack 2.
  • When the application is running, an exception is thrown in a callback routine that runs in the user mode.
In this scenario, the exception does not cause the application to crash as expected. Instead, the application enters into an inconsistent state. This causes the application to throw a different exception and crash.
