Only the first character appears for some strings in the event messages when you query the DFS Replication event log on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

When you query the DFS Replication event log in Windows Server 2008, only the first character appears for some strings in the event messages. The rest of the characters in these strings are truncated.

You frequently encounter this problem when you use the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Agent or the Get-Eventlog Windows PowerShell cmdlet to query the DFS Replication event log.

For example, we have the following description for an event in the DFS Replication event log:
Description:
The DFS Replication service successfully established an inbound connection with partner TEST-DEMO-TEST-SR2 for replication group TEST-DEMO-L2-SR2_TTC-DEMO-DFSR1.

Additional Information:
Connection Address Used: TEST-DEMO-L2-SR2.test.com
Connection ID: 57D8A1A7-D20B-4481-947E-C0783EED9BC3
Replication Group ID: E04169E3-C5DD-4865-9E2D-0171F1702E05

When you query this event, you obtain the following message for this event:
Message : The DFS Replication service successfully established an inbound connection with partner T for replication group T.

Additional Information:
Connection Address Used: T
Connection ID: 5
Replication Group ID: E

Cause

This problem occurs because Windows Server 2008 R2 uses an incorrect switch to create and to maintain the source file for event messages of Distributed File System (DFS) Replication. Because of this incorrect switch, Unicode characters are interpreted as ASCII characters.
