Stop error 0xD1 may occur on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

On a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista, you may receive the following Stop error:Note This Stop error may also be caused by other problems.

This problem usually occurs when the Netbt.sys driver is loaded and unloaded frequently.

When the Netbt.sys driver handles a timer expiry completion routine, the Netbt.sys driver does not obtain a global spin lock. This behavior may cause a timing issue. When the timing issue occurs, two threads in the Netbt.sys driver concurrently access a NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) timer structure. Then one of the two threads frees a call back pointer. However, the other thread tries to call back a routine by using the call back pointer that has already been freed. Therefore, the Stop error occurs.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
