A DHCPv6 server that is running Windows Server 2008 may drop the DHCP relay-forwarded packets if these packets contain some unknown options

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • A DHCP for IPv6 (DHCPv6) scope is created on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 and that has the DHCP Server role installed.
  • A DHCP relay agent exists between the DHCPv6 server and some DHCPv6 clients.
In this scenario, the DHCPv6 server that is running Windows Server 2008 might not issue IP version 6 (IPv6) addresses to these clients.

Note In a captured network trace of this scenario, the relay-forwarded packets contain some options other than the Relay-Message option and the Interface-ID option. For example, the packets contain the Remote ID option.

Cause

DHCPv6 servers that are running Windows Server 2008 drop the incoming relay-forwarded packets that contain options other than the Relay-Message option and the Interface-ID option. This behavior does not comply with Request for Comments (RFC).

Resolution

To resolve this problem, install this hotfix on the DHCPv6 servers that are running Windows Server 2008. After you install this hotfix, these DHCPv6 servers silently ignore unknown options in the incoming relay-forwarded packets. This behavior enables these DHCPv6 servers to issue IPv6 addresses to DHCPv6 clients through a DHCP replay agent.
