Error message when multiple network adapters are configured to use static IP addresses on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 SP2 or Windows Vista SP2: "0x000000D1 DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

Consider the following scenario:

• You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Vista SP2.
• The computer has multiple network adapters.
• Each network adapter is configured to use a static IP address.
• The TCP/IP Forwarding feature is enabled on this computer.

In this scenario, a Stop error occurs and the operating system automatically restarts. Then, you receive the following Stop error:
Note This problem typically occurs when you restart the computer or when third-party teaming software switches the active network adapter.

This issue occurs because the TCP/IP kernel driver (Tcpip.sys) does not correctly manage some data structures when the driver forwards network packets from one network adapter to another. This causes the system to access an invalid memory address.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

• The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and MUM files (.mum) installed for each environment are listed separately. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are very important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files (attributes not listed) are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

Disable IP forwarding with the following steps:

1. Run the following command to list all of the network interfaces:

   netsh interface ipv4 show interfaces
   

2. Run the following command to confirm if the Forwarding feature of the interface is enabled:

   netsh interface ipv4 show interface <idx#>
   

3. Run the following command to disable the Forwarding feature:

   netsh interface ipv4 set interface <idx#> forwarding=disabled

Method 2

Configure the network adapters to use dynamic IP addresses.
