A hotfix is available that addresses a slight delay that occurs when a 32-bit application closes a FAT or FAT32 volume on a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista or on Windows Server 2008

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume that you are running a 32-bit application on a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista or of Windows Server 2008. The application opens a FAT or a FAT32 volume, sends an IOCTL_SCSI_PASS_THROUGH or IOCTL_SCSI_PASS_THROUGH_DIRECT I/O request to the volume, and then closes the volume. In this scenario, the closing of the volume is delayed for 400 to 1500 milliseconds, depending on the size of the volume.

Cause

When the FastFAT file system handles the IOCTL_SCSI_PASS_THROUGH and IOCTL_SCSI_PASS_THROUGH_DIRECT requests, it does not check whether the originator of the I/O request is a 32-bit user-mode application. This behavior causes a flush operation to be scheduled against the volume unnecessarily. When the volume is closed, the flush operation is committed and causes a delay.
