Error message when you try to access the root of a drive after you leave HomeGroup in Windows 7 Release Candidate: "Access is denied."

Symptoms

On a Windows 7 Release Candidate-based computer that is running HomeGroup, consider the following scenario:
  • You join the computer to a homegroup.
  • You share the root of a drive, such as the E drive.
  • You leave the homegroup.
In this scenario, after you leave the homegroup, you cannot access the E drive. When you try to access the E drive, you receive the following error message:

E:\ is not accessible.
Access is denied.

Workaround

To work around this problem, take the following steps:

Note If the drive is a nonsystem drive, you can also take the following steps in Windows Explorer:
  1. Right-click the drive and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Security tab, and then click Advanced.
  3. Click the Owner tab, and then click Edit.
  4. Change ownership to the desired account or the desired group.
If you lose access to the system drive, you must restart in a parallel operating system that has access to the drive. Then, follow the previous steps. This may require you to remove the drive from the current computer and put the drive into another computer.
