Error message when you query the "Win32_Product" class after you install applications by using Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) 4.5 together with the "Per-User" option in Windows Server 2003 and in Windows XP: "0x80041001 - Generic failure"

Symptoms

Considering the following scenario:
  • You install Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) 4.5 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or that is running a 64-bit version of Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • You install multiple applications by using MSI together with the Per-User option. For example, you run the following command to install a MSI package named application.msi:
    MSIexec.exe /i application.msi ALLUSERS=""
In this scenario, when you run a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) query against the Win32_Product class to obtain a list of installed applications, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Error
Number: 0x80041001
Facility: WMI
Description: Generic failure
After you dismiss the error, the list of installed applications is not obtained.

Note This problem does not occur in Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1.

Resolution

Hotfix information

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, your computer must be running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2). Also, you must have Microsoft Windows Installer 4.5 installed on the computer.

Note Microsoft Windows Installer is an optional component in Windows Server 2003 SP2.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
