Cause

Windows Internet Explorer 8 fails to download and process the automatic configuration script that isspecified in the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings dialog box.

Resolution

Automatic Configuration no longer supports the following file types in Internet Explorer 8:
  • .INS
  • .CAB
  • .JS
  • .JVS

Note .WPAD and .PAC file types are still supported.

As a result of this, Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) 8 no longer supports customizing .INS, .JS, or .JVS file types. The Automatic Configuration dialog of the IEAK8 will not block adding these files types, however, such customizations will not be applied to Internet Explorer 8.

More information

To customize user's machines after deployment, deploying IEAK8 generated Configuration-only packages via Active Directory or Systems Management Server (SMS) is recommended. Group Policy can also be used to enforce customizations on users machines after deployment.
