Changes are not committed to the SharePoint server when you use an Office application such as Word or Excel to check in a document on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

You have a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2.You use an Office application such as Word, Excel or PowerPoint to check in a document to a Windows SharePoint server where a persistent cookie is being used. However, the document changes are not committed to the SharePoint server. You may also receive an error message that resembles the following:Note This problem does not occur on a client computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003.

This problem occurs because the DavFlushFile�function triggers an "Access Denied" error when the Office application�tries to check in the SharePoint document.

In the Windows operating systems that are affected by this problem, the WebDAV redirector responds to a file flush file system control (FSCTL) or to a file close request by sending a PUT message. Before the WebDAV redirector sends this PUT message, the WebDAV redirector must send a HEAD message so that the authentication challenges that are associated with the request are handled correctly. In Forms-based authentication, the HEAD message does not contain an authentication cookie. Therefore, the SharePoint server returns a 401 error. The SharePoint server also returns a "WWW-Authenticate" header that requests credentials in an authentication mechanism other than Forms-based authentication.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
