E-mail messages from certain external domains that have several recipients only have one archived copy instead of several archived copies after you enable the BCC Journaling feature on an Exchange Server 2003 server

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

After you enable the BCC Journaling feature on a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 server, you may find that e-mail messages from certain external domains only have one archived copy. These e-mail messages have one or more recipients instead of several archived copies that include all recipients. However, the original e-mail messages have more recipients in the BCC line of the e-mail messages.

Cause

This issue occurs because the original e-mail messages that have multiple BCC recipients are sent individually from the Internet. Therefore, the original e-mail messages were sent multiple times to the Exchange organization. Every time that an e-mail message is sent, only one or several recipients are included. However, the message ID remains the same for each e-mail message. When these messages are journaled, duplicate detection destroys the second and any later e-mail messages.

Registry information

After you install the hotfix, you have to change the registry entries on the server that is running Exchange Server 2003 for this hotfix to work correctly. There are two registry entries that you can use to disable duplicate detection for mailboxes or public folder.

The ParametersPrivate subkey is used to disable duplicate detection for mailboxes and the ParametersPublic subkey is used to disable duplicate detection for public folders. If you only use journaling mailbox, you only have to set the "Disable All Duplicate Detection" registry entry to 1 under the ParametersPrivate subkey. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type Regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkeys:
    HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/MSExchangeIS/ParametersPrivate
    HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/MSExchangeIS/ParametersPublic
Note If the ParametersPrivate subkey or the ParametersPublic subkey does not exist, create them before you do next step.
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type Disable All Duplicate Detection, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click Disable All Duplicate Detection, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, under Base, click Decimal.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1 , and then click OK.
  8. Exit Registry Editor.

  • The Microsoft Search service
  • The Internet Information Services (IIS) Admin Service and all dependent services
