View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You try to install Windows Server 2008 on a computer by using an iSCSI target as the installation target.
  • The computer is connected to the iSCSI target by an IPv6 connection.
  • When you are prompted for the installation target, you load all the required drivers for the network adapter on the computer.
In this scenario, the iSCSI target is not recognized as an installation target. Instead, you are prompted that there is no disk available for installing Windows Server 2008.

Hotfix information

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Hotfix installation instructions

Extracting the binary files
  1. Copy the hotfix file (Windows6.0-KB971443-x86.msu or Windows6.0-KB971443-x64.msu) into a folder.
  2. To extract the binary files from the hotfix package, open a command prompt, switch to the directory where the hotfix file is located, and then run the following command:
    expand -f:* Windows6.0-KB971443-plaform.msu .\
    expand /f:* Windows6.0-KB971443-plaform.cab .\
Note Replace platform with x86 or x64 as appropriate.
  3. In the folder where the binary files are extracted, locate one of the following folders as appropriate for your operating system version:
    • x86_iscsi.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.22458_none_3d1f5ae50ce59fda (for Windows Server 2008 x86)
    • x86_iscsi.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6002.22159_none_3f06cd170a0b0e55 (for Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 x86)
    • amd64_iscsi.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.22458_none_993df668c5431110 (for Windows Server 2008 x64)
    • amd64_iscsi.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6002.22159_none_9b25689ac2687f8b (for Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 x64)
  4. In the folder that you located in step 3, find the Msiscsi.sys file.

Creating valid DVD installation media

Before you follow these steps, visit the following Microsoft Web site to install the Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK):
Download the Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK) package now.
  1. Create a temporary folder, such as D:\temp.
  2. Create the following two subfolders in the Temp folder:
    1. Win2008Copy
    2. Win2008Mod
  3. Copy all the contents from the DVD installation media into the Win2008Copy folder.
  4. Open the Windows AIK command prompt in elevated mode, and then run the following commands:
    attrib -r .\Win2008Copy\sources\install.wim
    attrib -r .\Win2008Copy\sources\boot.wim
  5. Run the following command to mount the Install.wim image:
    imagex /mountrw .\Win2008Copy\sources\Install.wim X .\Win2008Mod
Note Replace the X placeholder with the image number (1 for Standard Server systems, 2 for Enterprise Server systems, 3 for DataCenter Server systems, and other corresponding image numbers).
  6. The Install.wim image was mounted in the Win2008Mod folder. Find the Msiscsi.sys files in the subfolders of the Win2008Mod folder, and then replace these files with the Msiscsi.sys file that you extracted from the hotfix package. To easily find all the Msiscsi.sys files to be replaced, run the following command:
    dir /s .\Win2008Mod\MSiSCSI.sys
  7. Run the following command to unmount the Install.wim image:
    imagex /unmount /commit .\Win2008Mod
  8. Run the following command to mount the Boot.wim image:
    imagex /mountrw .\Win2008Copy\sources\Boot.wim X .\Win2008Mod
Note Replace the X placeholder with the image number that you specified in step 5.
  9. The Boot.wim image was mounted in the Win2008Mod folder.
  10. Run the following command to unmount the Boot.wim image:
    imagex /unmount /commit .\Win2008Mod
  11. Run the following command to create an .iso file:
    OSCDimg.exe /m /nt /b"C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\platform\boot\etfsboot.com" .\Win2008Copy Win2008Mod.iso
Note The platform placeholder represents the architecture of the operating system to be installed, such as amd64 or x86.
  12. Burn the Win2008Mod.iso file to a DVD by using a DVD-burning application.
  13. Perform the installation by using the new DVD.
