Windows Explorer stops responding for approximately 30 seconds when you try to access the DFS resources in a Windows Server 2008 domain

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

In an Active Directory domain environment, you deploy a distributed file system on a domain controller that is running Windows Server 2008. However, when a domain user tries to access the Distributed File System (DFS) resources from a client computer, high network latency occurs. In this situation, the user notices that Windows Explorer stops responding for approximately 30 seconds.

This issue usually occurs if one of the following conditions is true when a user tries to access the DFS resources:
  • The user logs on to the domain for the first time.
  • The client computer is idle for more than 15 minutes.
