Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You have a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. You install the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1), XML Paper Specification (XPS) Essentials Pack, or any hotfix package that updates the Unidrv.dll file or other printer driver files. In this scenario, all Printer Control Language (PCL) inbox printer drivers become unsigned. Therefore, all PCL inbox printer driver installations are unsuccessful.

In this situation, all PCL inbox printer driver installations fail.

Cause

Inbox printer drivers are supposed to determine whether the Unidrv.dll file is signed in a catalog that is specified in the Ntprint.inf file. The path of this catalog file is displayed as "CatalogFile=ntprint.cat." When you use the Ntprint.inf file to install a driver, the system checks only for trusted files in the Ntprint.inf file.

However, if you install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, XPS Essentials Pack, or any hotfix package that updates the Unidrv.dll file or other printer driver files, binaries are signed in to a different .cat file than the Ntprint.cat file. Therefore, inbox driver installations fail.
