Single CALs support is available for Terminal Server license servers that are running Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

Currently, Terminal Server client access licenses (CALs) are sold in packs of 5 or 20. If you want a certain number of CALs that is not divisible by either pack quantity, you must purchase the next larger quantity that is available. For example, if you want 6 CALs, you must purchase 10 CALs.

Resolution

A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. This hotfix provides single CALs support for Terminal Server license servers that are running Windows Server 2008. With single CALs, you can buy as many CALs as required, and then you can install them on your license servers.

The following four kinds of single CAL packs are now available:
  • Per User
  • Per Device
  • Per User AE (Academic Edition)
  • Per Device AE (Academic Edition)

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem is that described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem is described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the “Hotfix Request” page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, your license server must be running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 Service Pack (SP2)

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.
