You cannot rescan the Indexing Service scope that has a full path of over 13 characters on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

Consider the following scenario:

• You install Indexing Service on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  
  Note For more information about Indexing Service and about the Indexing Service scope, see the "More Information" section.
• You rescan the Indexing Service scope by using the Indexing Service Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in window or by using a script to access the Indexing Service Administrative objects.
  
  Note A scan is when an Indexing Service scope (a directory or set of directories that are to be included in the index) is examined. The scan examines the scope to check whether any files were added, deleted, or updated since the last time that the directory was indexed.

In this scenario, the rescan may fail without returning an error. Therefore, when the index is searched, new documents cannot be located in the index.

Note This problem typically occurs when the Indexing Service scope has a full path length of more than 13 characters.

This problem occurs because of an error in the Query.dll file.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, the computer must be running one of the following operating systems:

• Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)
• Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
• Windows Server 2008
• Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Additionally, you must have the hotfix 947265 installed on your computer before you apply this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Installation instructions

1. Install the hotfix 947265. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
   947265 In Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, the Content Indexer service cannot index the custom properties of a document
2. Enable the hotfix by modifying the BindDirectlyToPropertySetStorage registry entry as documented in the "Registry information" section of Microsoft Knowledge Base article 947265.
   
   Note You can use the Fix it package to automatically enable the hotfix.
3. Install the hotfix that is described in this article.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.
