Gpresult.exe terminates unexpectedly displaying security options when using the "/v" flag on Windows Sever 2003 x64

On a Windows Server 2003 x64 computer, gpresult.exe may terminate unexpectedly while attempting to display security options using the "/v" flag to include verbose information.

The following error is logged in the Application log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event ID: 1000
Description: Faulting application gpresult.exe, version 5.2.3790.3959, faulting module gpresult.exe, version 5.2.3790.3959, fault address 0x000000000001323c.

This problem may occur when the following Group Policy setting is enabled:

����Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options

����Interactive Logon: Prompt user to change password before expiration

Gpresult.exe reads this policy setting display name from the registry and clears the security cookie on the stack in the process. This later causes a failure on security cookie check causing the application to terminate and event ID 1000 to be logged in the Application log.

1. Start Regedit.exe.
2. Edit the following REG_SZ value: "Interactive logon: Prompt user to change password before expiration" and set it to "Interactive logon: Prompt user to change password before expire"

   Note It is necessary to change the word expiration to expire in order to reduce the string size of the registry value to prevent this error.
