A computer that is running Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 crashes when a third-party filter driver returns the "STATUS_PENDING" value in response to an IRP

Symptoms

Several minutes after you turn on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, the computer crashes. This problem occurs when a user datagram protocol (UDP) or transmission control protocol (TCP) packet is sent to a third-party filter driver, and then the driver returns the STATUS_PENDING value in response to the I/O request packet (IRP).

Cause

This problem occurs because the system uses a stack variable to store the remote address that is used to send the reply packet. When the filter driver returns the STATUS_PENDING value, the stack is unwound and the variable becomes unavailable. Therefore, the system crashes when the reply packet tries to use the remote address.
