Internet Explorer 6 crashes when you try to select an option from a drop-down list that is in a frame on a Web page

Symptoms

You use Internet Explorer 6 to browse a Web page that contains a frameset. One of the frames in the frameset contains a Select element that is displayed as a drop-down list. When you try to select an option from the drop-down list in the frame, Internet Explorer 6 crashes.

When this issue occurs, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you click the Click here link for more information, you see the following error signature:
    AppName: iexplore.exe
    AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
    ModName: mshtml.dll
    ModVer: 6.0.2900.3527
    Offset: 0006963f

Additionally, an event that resembles the following is logged in the Application log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: Date
Time: Time
User: N/A
Description: Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module mshtml.dll, version 6.0.2900.3527, fault address 0x0006963f.
Note In this event, the Mshtml.dll file version and the fault address may vary.

Cause

This issue occurs because there is a script on the Web page which tries to rewrite the frame that contains the Select element. This occurs when the OnChange event of the Select element fires.

Resolution

Security update information
