After a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or an x64-based version of Windows XP resumes from standby or from hibernation, you cannot shut down or restart the computer.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a multiprocessor computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or you have a multiprocessor computer that is running an x64-based version of Windows XP.
  • On the computer, the Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby check box is selected on the Advanced tab of the Power Options Properties dialog box.
  • You configure the following Group Policy settings in the Security Options of Local Policies:
    • You disable the Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL Group Policy setting.
    • You set the Interactive logon: Smart card removal behavior Group Policy setting to Lock Workstation.
  • You log on to the computer by using a smart card, and then you put the computer into standby or into hibernation.
  • You remove the smart card when the computer is in sleep mode.
  • You resume the computer.
In this scenario, you may be unable to restart or shut down the computer. You must press and hold the power button to force the computer to shut down.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, the computer must have Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 installed.

Restart requirement

You have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
