You experience high CPU utilization when an application uses the IPMI driver to communicate with the baseboard management controller on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, an application uses the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) driver to communicate with the baseboard management controller (BMC). However, even when the system is almost idle, you experience high CPU utilization in this situation. Sometimes, CPU utilization may grow to 50 percent of system resources.

Note:The hotfix packages below supersede the previous released hotfix for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. The first version of the hotfix package included a regression that could cause a stall during the stop error. As a result, a Dump file may not be generated. This issue does not effect the Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 versions of the packages.

Cause

This problem occurs because the IPMI driver unexpectedly stalls a thread for a long time.
