A Windows Server 2003-based computer stops responding when you use a debug application to suspend a thread

Symptoms

A Windows Server 2003-based computer may stop responding (hang) when you use a debug application to suspend a running thread on the computer.

Cause

This issue occurs when the thread that you try to suspend owns a lock. Other threads encounter a hang state because they cannot obtain this lock.

Resolution

A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. After you install this hotfix, the computer does not allow a thread to be suspended if it owns a lock.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, the computer must have Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 installed.

Restart requirement

You have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
