When you start a terminal session to a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 and that has the terminal server role installed, the full Windows desktop starts instead of the program that is specified by the terminal server

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You start a terminal session to a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 and has the terminal server role installed.
  • A specific program is configured to start on this terminal server when a terminal session is started.
  • You end the terminal session while the terminal session is still being established. For example, you close the terminal session window when you see the "Preparing your desktop" screen.
  • You start another terminal session to the same terminal server by using the same user account.
In this scenario, the full Windows desktop starts instead of the specified program.

Cause

When a terminal session starts, the userinit.exe program determines which program to start. However, when this issue occurs, the server does not correctly log off from the terminal session. Therefore, the userinit.exe program cannot locate the specified program. Instead, the program starts the explorer.exe process. Therefore, the full Windows desktop appears in the terminal session.

Resolution

A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. After you apply this hotfix, the userinit.exe program logs off the current terminal session if it cannot locate the specified program.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the “Hotfix Request” page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.
