When you use the Active Directory Lookup feature for Microsoft Services for NFS the ownership information of the files and folders in an NFS share is missing after several minutes

Consider the following scenario:

• You install Microsoft Services for Network File System (NFS) on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008.
• You use the Active Directory Lookup feature to map UNIX identities for users and for groups on UNIX clients.
• You export some NFS shares to NFS clients, and then you mount the shares on an NFS client.

After several minutes, you navigate to the mounted NFS shares. When you run the ls command, you find the ownership information of the files and folders is missing. Additionally, if you run the cat command, the ownership information of files that your current user account owns is displayed. However, the ownership information of the other files is still missing.

This problem occurs because the NFS service uses the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) client instead of the LDAP server to make an LDAP query.

A hotfix is available to resolve this problem. After you install this hotfix, you must change the domain name of the directory service to the NetBIOS name of the Active Directory domain. To do this, you run the following command:

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have Services of NFS installed on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This problem also exists on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 R2 and that has Microsoft Services for NFS installed. To resolve the problem on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 R2, you do not have to install the hotfix. However, you have to change the domain name of the directory service to the NetBIOS name of the Active Directory domain.
