Instead of the specified startup program, the whole desktop is started on a remote desktop connection when you change the "Terminal Services Profile" setting for the user account

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a terminal server, you configure startup programs that will run when terminal service clients connect to the terminal server.
  • You change some settings on the Terminal Services Profile tab for a user account on a Windows Server 2008-based domain controller or on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain controller.
  • You make a terminal session to the terminal server by using the user account.
  • You specify a startup program in the "Remote Desktop Connection" setting.

Note To specify a startup program, open Remote Desktop Connection, click the Start the following program on connection option on the Programs tab, and then type the path of the startup program.
In this scenario, the whole desktop is started. However, you expect that only the specified program is started.

Cause

This problem occurs because Windows Server 2008-based domain controller or the Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain controller incorrectly disallows the Start the following program on connection option when you change some settings on the Terminal Services Profile tab for the user.

Resolution

A hotfix is available to resolve this problem. This hotfix can be installed on a Windows Server 2008-based domain controller, on a Windows Server 2008-based terminal server, Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain controller, or on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based terminal server. If you install this hotfix only on the domain controller, this will resolve the problem only for newly-added users. If you install this hotfix on both the domain controller and on the terminal server, this will resolve the problem for all users.

Note This hotfix will not resolve the problem for the existing users if you use a terminal server that is running an operating system other than Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.
