FIX: Error message when you build a project that has an enumeration with many elements and the names of the elements are very long in Visual Studio 2005 SP1: "fatal error LNK1103: debugging information corrupt; recompile module."


Symptoms

When you build a project by using Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1, you receive the following error message:
fatal error LNK1103: debugging information corrupt; recompile module.
This problem occurs when the project has an enumeration that contains many elements and the names of the elements are very long.

Cause

This problem occurs because the debug information that the front-end compiler generates for large enumerations is corrupted.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.
