The Windows Server 2008 NPS accounting log does not contain the IP address information of the SSTP client

Consider the following scenario:

• Users make Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP) connections to a VPN server that is running Windows Server 2008.
• Network Policy Server (NPS) logging is enabled on the VPN server.

In the NPS accounting log, you find that the IP address information (attributes 31 and 66) of the SSTP client is missing. Therefore, the users cannot audit the IP addresses of the SSTP client from the NPS accounting log.

This problem occurs because the VPN server that is running Windows Server 2008 does not pass the IP address information of the SSTP client to the NPS server.

To resolve the issue, install the following hotfix. After you install the hotfix, you find that the NPS accounting log contains the IP address information of the SSTP client.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have the "Network Policy and Access Services" (NPAS) role installed on your computer that is running one of the following operating systems:

• Windows Server 2008
• Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix does not replace any other previously released hotfixes.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files (attributes not listed) are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
