After you append new characters in an HTML page text area in Internet Explorer 7, the original characters in the text area are replaced with the new characters

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario on a Windows Vista-based computer that is running Windows Internet Explorer 7:
  • In Internet Explorer 7, you open an HTML page that has a text area. The text area contains original characters.
  • You click the text area and then type new characters in addition to the original characters.
  • You click anywhere outside the text area.
In this scenario, the original characters in the text area are replaced with the new characters that you append.

Note This issue does not occur if you press ENTER after you append the new characters.

Cause

This problem occurs because the OnChange event is fired before the Input Method Editor (IME) composition is stopped. Therefore, IME receives incorrect information about the text range. This incorrect text range information causes IME to remove the original characters in the text area.
