Symptoms

When upgrading your current operating system to Windows 7 on a computer that is running Windows Live OneCare, you may encounter one of the following messages:
“These programs might not work properly after the upgrade. We recommend uninstalling these programs before upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel and search for uninstall a program.”

When you complete the Windows 7 upgrade on a computer that is running Windows Live OneCare, you may encounter the following messages when starting Windows Live OneCare:
“This program has known compatibility issues… Windows Live OneCare is incompatible with this version of windows. For more information contact Microsoft.”

You may receive this message after restarting your computer:
“The Windows Live OneCare service is not working or has been stopped. To correct this problem, try restarting your computer. If the problem continues, click below to get help.”

You may also receive this message if you try starting the Windows Live OneCare services:
“Windows could not start the Windows Live OneCare service on Local computer. Error 1150: The specified program requires a new version of Windows.”

Cause

Windows Live OneCare is not compatible with Windows 7.The messages listed in the "Symptoms" section can occur if Windows Live OneCare is running during the upgrade to Windows 7, or they can occur after you restart the computer.

Resolution

To successfully upgrade to Window 7 you must uninstall Windows Live OneCare.

Important: Backups created with OneCare cannot be used with Windows 7. If you currently have data that only exists in a backup created using Windows Live OneCare, you should restore that data using Windows Live OneCare and then backup or copy that data to another location using Windows Backup or another backup utility. See the "More information" section for help doing this.

To resolve the issue uninstall Windows Live OneCare from Add/Remove programs.   If you cannot uninstall OneCare, you must download and run the OneCare cleanup utility. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click the following link to download the OneCare Cleanup utility to your computer. Then click Save to save the download to your desktop.
    Download the OneCare Cleanup utility now
  2. When the download completes right-click the OneCareCleanUp.exe file on your desktop, and then click Run as administrator.
  3. Click Run on the Internet Explorer Security dialog box.
    • User Account Control permission If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click
      Continue, and then, click
      OK
  4. When you receive the message “This program will clean Windows Live OneCare from your computer...” click Continue.
  5. Click Accept on the End-User Licensing Agreement, and then click Continue.
  6. Click Clean to begin cleaning Windows Live OneCare from your computer.
  7. When the cleaning process has completed you will be prompted to restart your computer. Close all running applications, and then click Restart Now.
