The NFS services stop responding after a certain period when you use a Windows Server 2008-based server that has NFS installed to export NFS shares

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows Server 2008-based server that has Microsoft Services for Network File System (NFS) installed.
  • The server exports NFS shares to NFS clients.
In this scenario, the NFS services stop responding after a certain period. The NFS clients cannot access the shares that they have mounted. Also, the clients cannot mount the other shares from the NFS server. Additionally, when you run the showmount command prompt utility or the rpcinfo command prompt utility against the NFS server, a time-out error may occur.

Note The NFS services recover after you restart the NFS server.

Cause

This problem occurs because an acquired Mutex object is not released in a code path. This makes the NFS services unresponsive.
