You receive an error message when you try to install 2007 Microsoft Office suite service packs


Symptoms

When you try to install 2007 Microsoft Office suite service packs from Microsoft Update, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2).
When you try to install 2007 Microsoft Office suite service packs from the Setup file, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2) has stopped working.
Additionally, when you try to install 2007 Microsoft Office suite service packs, an error message that resembles one of the following is logged in the 2007 Microsoft Office suite service pack installation logs:

Cause

The installation of 2007 Microsoft Office suite service packs fail with error 1935 or with error 78F. This failure occurs when the Windows Installer encounters a reference either to a drive that no longer exists or to a removable media device that contains no readable media. For example, this failure may occur when the Windows Installer encounters a reference to an empty DVD drive or to an empty CD drive.

Resolution

This issue is resolved by update 967642 for the 2007 Office system. Update 967642 is provided to resolve the problem that you may experience when you install 2007 Microsoft Office suite service packs. If you experience this issue, you must install update 967642 on your computer and then reinstall 2007 Microsoft Office suite service packs.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Apply update 967642 that is mentioned in the "Resolution" section, and then reinstall the 2007 Office suite service pack that did not install successfully.

Method 2

Put a readable DVD or CD in the DVD drive or in the CD drive before you install the 2007 Microsoft Office suite service pack.


Note We do not recommend that you use Method 2. On some operating systems, Method 2 allows for the drive to be accessed so that the 2007 Microsoft Office suite service pack can be installed successfully. However, the issue with the original invalid drive still exists. Additionally, this issue may recur when you apply future 2007 Office updates.
